Book of Luke - Chapter 21 - Verse 21

21:21
Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

Meaning

During biblical times, Judea was a region that faced frequent turmoil and persecution. In this particular verse, there is a call to action for those living in Judea to flee to the mountains and escape the impending danger. The mountains provided a place of safety and refuge from the chaos that was about to ensue. Those in the midst of the region were advised to depart and not remain in harm's way. Furthermore, individuals from the surrounding areas were warned not to enter Judea, as it was an unsafe and hostile environment at that time. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking safety and protection in times of trouble, as well as the need to heed warnings and avoid potentially dangerous situations.

Theological Overview

As we examine the theological interpretation of this verse, we can understand that it comes from the Gospel of Luke, specifically in reference to the destruction of Jerusalem. This verse can be seen as a warning to those living in Judea, telling them to flee to the mountains when the impending destruction is near. The phrase "let them which are in the midst of it depart out" could be interpreted as encouraging the people to leave the city and not stay to face the impending destruction. The mention of not letting those in the countryside enter into the city may indicate that they should not try to return to Jerusalem once they have fled. This verse is often seen as a prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem, which historically occurred in AD 70 when the Roman army laid siege to the city. Overall, this passage serves as a reminder of the importance of listening to warnings and being prepared for times of trouble.
