Book of Luke - Chapter 21 - Verse 14

21:14
Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:

Meaning

When we are faced with difficult situations or when we are being questioned, it can be tempting to spend a lot of time trying to come up with the perfect answer. However, this verse reminds us that we should not rely solely on our own wisdom or intellect when responding to others. Instead, we are encouraged to trust in God and to allow the Holy Spirit to guide our words. By settling it in our hearts to not meditate beforehand, we are demonstrating our faith in God to speak through us and to provide us with the right words at the right time. This verse serves as a reminder to rely on God's wisdom and guidance in all situations, knowing that He is always there to help us and give us the words we need.

Theological Overview

When analyzing the theological interpretation of Luke 21:14, it is crucial to understand the context in which this verse appears. Jesus is speaking to his disciples about the challenges they will face while spreading the gospel. In this particular verse, Jesus is advising his followers not to worry about what to say when they are persecuted for their faith. The word "meditate" in this context refers not to thoughtful contemplation, but rather to worry or anxiety. Jesus is encouraging his disciples to trust in the Holy Spirit to guide their words in times of trouble, rather than relying on their own understanding.

Furthermore, the concept of "settling it in your hearts" implies a firm decision or conviction. Jesus is urging his followers to make a deliberate choice to trust in God's provision and protection, rather than allowing fear or doubt to overtake them. This verse serves as a reminder that as believers, we are called to have unwavering faith in God's sovereignty and plan, even in the face of adversity.
