Book of Luke - Chapter 20 - Verse 5

20:5
And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

Meaning

When the religious leaders questioned Jesus about the source of His authority, He responded by asking them about the authority of John the Baptist. In this verse, the religious leaders are discussing amongst themselves how to answer Jesus' question. They understood that if they acknowledged John's authority as coming from heaven, Jesus would ask them why they did not believe him. This dilemma forced them to carefully consider their response, as they did not want to incriminate themselves or anger the crowd. This verse illustrates the cunning and deceptive nature of the religious leaders, as they were more concerned with their own reputation and status than with acknowledging the truth of John's ministry and Jesus' authority.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the Pharisees are questioning among themselves about what answer to give regarding John the Baptist's authority. The word "reasoned" in the original Greek (συνελογίζοντο) implies deep thought and consideration, suggesting a careful deliberation on their part. Their dilemma revolves around what response would be most strategic to give to Jesus' question. The word "heaven" (οὐρανοῦ) is significant in this context as it refers to a divine origin, indicating that they are grappling with the implications of admitting John's authority. Additionally, the questioning of why they did not believe John carries theological weight, highlighting the Pharisees' lack of faith and obedience towards God's messengers. This verse showcases the complexity of human reasoning and the consequences of a hardened heart towards God's truth, urging readers to reflect on their own responses to divine authority.
