Book of Luke - Chapter 17 - Verse 18

17:18
There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is illustrating the importance of gratitude and giving glory to God. The story behind this verse is about ten lepers who were healed by Jesus, but only one of them, who happened to be a Samaritan, returned to give thanks and praise to God. The other nine did not come back to express their gratitude. This instance serves as a reminder to always acknowledge the blessings and miracles in our lives and to give credit where it is due - to God. It also highlights the significance of showing appreciation for the good things that happen to us, as it not only honors God but also strengthens our relationship with Him. By recognizing and praising God for the wonderful things He has done, we cultivate a spirit of humility and thankfulness that can bring us closer to Him.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the Gospel of Luke, Jesus points out that out of the ten lepers who were healed, only one returned to give thanks and glorify God - and he was a Samaritan, considered an outsider by the Jews. This serves as a reminder to all believers to never take God's blessings for granted and to always remember to give thanks and praise to Him. The theological interpretation of this passage highlights the importance of gratitude and humility in the Christian faith. It emphasizes the idea that true faith is not just about receiving blessings from God, but also about responding with a grateful heart and acknowledging His power and grace. The word "stranger" in this context could be seen as symbolic of the marginalized and the outcasts in society, showing that God's love and mercy are available to all, regardless of their background or status. This verse serves as a powerful lesson on the nature of true worship and the importance of acknowledging and glorifying God in all circumstances.
