Book of Luke - Chapter 17 - Verse 11

17:11
And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

Meaning

When Jesus passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee on his way to Jerusalem, it held significant meaning. Samaria was the region where Samaritans lived, a group of people considered outcasts by the Jews due to their mixed ancestry and different beliefs. By choosing to pass through Samaria, Jesus was demonstrating his inclusive love and compassion for all people, regardless of their background or reputation. Galilee, on the other hand, was a region where many of Jesus' disciples came from, emphasizing his close relationship with them and the importance of their role in his ministry. This verse serves as a reminder of Jesus' mission to reach out to all people with his message of salvation and to show love and acceptance to everyone he encountered, regardless of societal norms or prejudices.

Theological Overview

As Jesus journeyed towards Jerusalem, he intentionally passed through the regions of Samaria and Galilee. This geographical detail holds theological significance as it highlights Jesus' mission to reach out to all people, regardless of their background or ethnicity. Samaria was a region inhabited by the Samaritans, who were considered outsiders by the Jews due to their mixed heritage and differing religious practices. By passing through Samaria, Jesus demonstrated his inclusive love and willingness to bring salvation to all. Additionally, visiting Galilee, where Jesus spent much of his ministry, underscores the continuity of his mission and the fulfillment of prophecy. This passage also foreshadows the spread of the gospel message to all nations, as Jesus' ministry was not limited to a specific group of people but extended to the ends of the earth. Through this simple journey, Jesus exemplified his role as the Savior for all people, inviting everyone to partake in the kingdom of God.
