Book of Luke - Chapter 10 - Verse 6

10:6
And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Luke is a reminder of the importance of seeking peace in interactions with others. It suggests that if we encounter someone who is receptive to peace, that peace will be reciprocated and rest upon both parties. However, if the person we meet is not conducive to peace, the verse implies that the peace we offer will return back to us. This can be seen as a lesson in discernment, encouraging us to be mindful of the energy we bring into a situation and to recognize when it is not being received positively. By being aware of the dynamics of peace in our interactions, we can strive to cultivate harmonious relationships and avoid unnecessary conflicts. Overall, this verse emphasizes the power of peace to not only transform our own actions and attitudes but also to influence those around us, leading to more meaningful and fulfilling connections with others.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Jesus is instructing his disciples on how to spread the message of peace. The phrase "son of peace" refers to someone who is receptive to the message of peace and goodwill that the disciples are sharing. If such a person is present, their peace will rest upon the place they are visiting. This highlights the importance of finding those who are open to receiving the message of peace, as they will be instrumental in spreading it further. However, if the "son of peace" is not there, the peace that the disciples bring will return to them. This emphasizes the cyclical nature of peace - when it is not received, the disciples are not to force it upon others, but rather remain steadfast in their own peace. This verse reminds us of the importance of discerning where our efforts will be most effective and not wasting energy where they will not be received.
