Book of Luke - Chapter 10 - Verse 40

10:40
But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

Meaning

In this verse, we see Martha expressing her frustration to Jesus about her sister Mary, who chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to his teachings rather than help with the household chores. Martha was busy serving and preparing for their guests while Mary seemed unconcerned with helping her. Martha's plea to Jesus reflects her feelings of being overwhelmed and neglected. She questions Jesus, asking if he even cares that she is left alone to do all the work. This situation serves as a reminder of the balance between serving others and taking time to sit and learn from the teachings of Jesus. It highlights the importance of not getting so caught up in the busyness of life that we neglect our spiritual growth and relationship with God. Jesus' response to Martha's plea provides a valuable lesson for us all on the importance of finding a balance between service and spiritual nourishment.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Martha is portrayed as being overwhelmed by the responsibilities of serving. The word "cumbered" in the original Greek text is "periespato," which conveys the idea of being distracted or anxious about many things. Martha's focus on the physical aspect of serving instead of the spiritual aspect of being in the presence of Jesus leads her to feel burdened and overlooked. When she approaches Jesus and asks Him to intervene, her complaint reveals her limited understanding of the situation. Jesus gently responds to Martha, highlighting the importance of choosing the better portion, which is to prioritize spending time with Him over being preoccupied with serving. This story serves as a reminder for believers to not be consumed by the busyness of life but to seek first the Kingdom of God.
