Book of Luke - Chapter 10 - Verse 37

10:37
And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Luke in the New Testament tells the story of the Good Samaritan, one of Jesus' most famous parables. In this story, a man is robbed, beaten, and left for dead on the side of the road. Several people pass by without helping him, including a priest and a Levite. However, a Samaritan stops to help the man, showing him compassion and mercy. When Jesus is asked who the man's neighbor is, he responds by telling the story of the Good Samaritan and then instructs his followers to go and do likewise. This verse emphasizes the importance of showing kindness and mercy to others, regardless of their background or circumstances. It teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves and to always be willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. By following Jesus' example of compassion and mercy, we can make the world a better and more loving place for all.

Theological Overview

In the theological interpretation of the verse from Luke 10:37, we see Jesus teaching about the importance of showing mercy and compassion to others. The parable of the Good Samaritan is a well-known story where a man shows kindness and mercy to a stranger in need. When Jesus asks who was a neighbor to the man who fell among thieves, the answer given by the expert in the law was the one who showed mercy. Jesus then instructs him to go and do likewise. This verse emphasizes the value of extending kindness and compassion to those around us, regardless of their background or circumstances. The Greek word used for "shewed mercy" in this verse is "ἐλεέω" (eleeo), which can also be translated as "have compassion" or "show pity." This word conveys the idea of being moved with compassion towards someone in need. Jesus' command to go and do likewise challenges us to actively seek out opportunities to show mercy and kindness to those in need, following the example of the Good Samaritan.
