Book of Luke - Chapter 10 - Verse 2

10:2
Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is speaking to his disciples about the importance of spreading the word of God. He uses the analogy of a harvest to illustrate the vast number of people who are seeking spiritual guidance and enlightenment. The "harvest" represents the souls of people who are ready to receive the message of God's love and salvation. Jesus acknowledges that the task of harvesting these souls is great, but the number of workers available to do this work is limited. Therefore, he encourages his followers to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send more laborers into the fields to spread the Gospel. This verse serves as a call to action for believers to actively participate in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others and to pray for more workers to join in this important mission. By praying for more laborers, believers are aligning themselves with God's will and actively participating in His plan to reach every soul with the message of salvation.

Theological Overview

Here, Jesus is using the analogy of a harvest to describe the spiritual need for laborers in the Kingdom of God. The harvest symbolizes the opportunity to bring people to salvation and discipleship. Jesus acknowledges that there is a great need for workers to go out into the world and share the good news. He emphasizes the urgency of the situation by pointing out that while the harvest is plentiful, the laborers are few. This highlights the need for more dedicated individuals to participate in the spread of the gospel. The significance of this verse lies in the call to action for believers to pray to God for more workers to be sent into the harvest field. By asking the Lord of the harvest to send workers, believers are showing their reliance on God to equip and empower individuals for the task at hand. This verse serves as a reminder for Christians to actively seek opportunities to be used by God in reaching out to others.
