Book of Leviticus - Chapter 8 - Verse 10

8:10
And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them.

Meaning

When Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, he was carrying out a sacred act of consecration. Anointing with oil was a common practice in ancient Israel to symbolize the setting apart of an object or person for a special purpose. In this case, the anointing of the tabernacle signified that it was being dedicated for the worship and service of God. The oil represented the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, which would dwell in the tabernacle and among the people of Israel. By sanctifying the tabernacle and all its contents, Moses was ensuring that they were made holy and acceptable for use in the worship of the Lord. This act of anointing was a solemn and important ritual that marked the tabernacle as a place set apart for divine worship and communion with God.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the act of anointing the tabernacle and all its contents with oil carries deep theological significance. Anointing with oil was a common practice in the Old Testament, symbolizing the setting apart and consecration of objects or individuals for God's use. The anointing oil itself was made with a specific recipe, symbolizing the presence and power of God. By anointing the tabernacle and its contents, Moses was dedicating them to God's service and sanctifying them for holy use. This act of anointing not only physically consecrated the tabernacle but also spiritually set it apart as a sacred space for encountering the presence of God. Through studying the significance of anointing in this context, we can deepen our understanding of the importance of consecration and dedication in our own lives, as we seek to cultivate a space for God's presence to dwell within us.
