Book of Leviticus - Chapter 7 - Verse 7

7:7
As the sin offering is, so is the trespass offering: there is one law for them: the priest that maketh atonement therewith shall have it.

Meaning

In this verse, it is explained that the sin offering and the trespass offering have the same requirements and regulations. Both offerings are meant to make atonement for sins committed by individuals. The sin offering is typically for unintentional sins or sins committed out of ignorance, while the trespass offering is more specific and deals with sins committed against others. Despite the slight differences in their purposes, both offerings serve the same ultimate goal – to provide a way for individuals to be reconciled with God and receive forgiveness for their sins.

Additionally, the verse emphasizes that there is one law that governs both offerings, highlighting the consistency and fairness of God's justice. It also underscores the importance of the role of the priest in making atonement for the sins of the people. The priest acts as a mediator between the individual and God, facilitating the process of forgiveness and reconciliation. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder of the need for repentance, forgiveness, and the importance of following the laws and regulations set forth by God in order to receive atonement for sins.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of Leviticus 7:7, it is crucial to understand the significance of sin and trespass offerings within the context of the Israelite sacrificial system. In this verse, the text emphasizes the parallel between the sin offering and the trespass offering, stating that there is one law for both. This suggests that despite slight differences in the purpose of these offerings, they both serve as means of atonement for sins committed. The priest who performs the atonement rituals plays a central role in carrying out these offerings, underscoring the importance of properly following the prescribed laws and procedures. Through these offerings, the Israelites sought to restore their relationship with God by acknowledging their wrongdoing and seeking forgiveness through the designated sacrificial practices. By adhering to the laws governing these offerings, the priests ensured the effectiveness of the atonement process and ultimately facilitated reconciliation between the people and God.

American Standard Version
