Book of Leviticus - Chapter 27 - Verse 19

27:19
And if he that sanctified the field will in any wise redeem it, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it, and it shall be assured to him.

Meaning

This verse in Leviticus is part of the regulations set forth for the redemption of consecrated fields. When a person sanctifies a field to the Lord, they have the option to redeem it. If they choose to do so, they must add a fifth of the estimated value of the field to the redemption price. This additional amount ensures that the sanctified field remains consecrated to the Lord and cannot be sold or transferred to another party. By requiring the redemption price to include this additional fifth, the verse emphasizes the sacredness of the field and the importance of honoring one's commitments to God. This practice of redemption with the added fifth part symbolizes a form of restitution and dedication, reflecting the Israelites' respect for the sanctity of their possessions and their relationship with the Lord.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Leviticus 27:19, the concept of redemption is highlighted in the context of sanctifying a field. The theological interpretation of this verse centers around the idea of making something holy or set apart for a special purpose. In Biblical times, the act of sanctifying a field meant dedicating it to the Lord or using it for a specific religious purpose. The process of redemption mentioned here signifies the act of reclaiming or buying back what was originally dedicated to God. This redemption required the individual to add a fifth of the estimated value of the field to buy it back. This adds a layer of accountability and reverence for what was originally dedicated to God. The word study of "sanctified" and "redeem" in this verse sheds light on the importance of consecrating possessions to God and the process of reclaiming them if necessary. It emphasizes the values of stewardship, commitment, and honoring the sacred.

American Standard Version

And if he that sanctified the field will indeed redeem it, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it, and it shall be assured to him.
