Book of Leviticus - Chapter 25 - Verse 20

25:20
And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase:

Meaning

This verse from Leviticus 25 addresses the concern of the Israelites about what they will eat in the seventh year, known as the sabbatical year. The sabbatical year was a year of rest for the land, where no planting or harvesting was allowed. The verse highlights the lack of faith and trust in God's provision that the Israelites had. Instead of relying on God to provide for them during the sabbatical year, they were worried about where their food would come from. This verse serves as a reminder to trust in God's provision and to obey His commandments, even when it may seem difficult or uncertain. It teaches us the importance of faith, obedience, and dependence on God for our needs. Ultimately, the verse encourages us to have faith that God will take care of us, even in times of scarcity or uncertainty.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Leviticus 25:20, the theological interpretation centers around the concept of trust in God's provision. The context of the verse is the commandment to observe the Sabbath year and let the land rest every seventh year. The concern raised by the people is valid - what will they eat in the seventh year if they do not sow or gather crops? However, the underlying message is one of faith and dependence on God. The theological lesson here is that by obeying God's commandments, even when it seems difficult or impractical, we demonstrate our trust in His ability to provide for our needs. This verse emphasizes the importance of faithfulness and obedience, even in times of scarcity or uncertainty. Through a word study of "eat" and "sow," we can further deepen our understanding of the significance of trusting in God's provision and following His commands, even when it may seem challenging or counterintuitive.
