Book of Leviticus - Chapter 25 - Verse 15

25:15
According to the number of years after the jubilee thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee:

Meaning

This verse from Leviticus 25:15-16 provides guidance on the fair trade of land during the Year of Jubilee. During this special year, which occurred every 50 years, ancestral lands were to be returned to their original owners, ensuring equitable distribution of wealth. The verse emphasizes the importance of considering the number of years left until the next Jubilee when buying or selling land. This was to prevent unfair pricing and ensure that both the buyer and seller were treated justly. The verse also mentions the consideration of the number of years of harvest that the land will produce, indicating that the price should reflect the potential yield. By following these guidelines, individuals were able to transact fairly and maintain the principles of economic justice outlined in the laws of the Israelites.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse from Leviticus 25 centers around the concept of the Jubilee year, which was a time of celebration and social justice in ancient Israel. During the Jubilee year, all ancestral lands were returned to their original owners, and slaves were set free. The verse emphasizes fairness and honesty in business dealings, instructing the Israelites to base the buying and selling of produce on the number of years since the last Jubilee. This system ensured that no one could take advantage of their neighbors or exploit them for personal gain. The word "jubilee" itself is derived from the Hebrew word "yovel," which means a ram's horn, symbolizing the blowing of the shofar to announce the Jubilee year. Through this verse, God teaches his people the importance of fairness, generosity, and trust in all aspects of life, including economic transactions.

American Standard Version

According to the number of years after the jubilee thou shalt buy of thy neighbor, [and] according unto the number of years of the crops he shall sell unto thee.
