Book of Leviticus - Chapter 23 - Verse 36

23:36
Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Leviticus, it is explained that for seven days, the Israelites were to offer a sacrifice made by fire to the Lord. This act of offering was a way for the people to show their devotion and gratitude to God. However, on the eighth day, there was to be a special holy convocation where another offering was to be made. This eighth day was considered a solemn assembly, a time of reflection and worship. During this day, the people were instructed not to engage in any servile work, emphasizing the importance of dedicating that day entirely to the Lord. This practice of offering sacrifices and holding convocations was a key part of the Israelites' religious ceremonies and rituals, highlighting their commitment to honoring and worshiping God.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the offering made by fire unto the LORD for seven days symbolizes the consecration and dedication of the people to God through sacrifice. The number seven is often seen as a symbol of completion or perfection in the Bible, indicating the fullness of the offering and the completeness of the act of worship. The eighth day, which follows the seven days of offerings, represents a new beginning or a fresh start. It is a holy convocation, a time set apart for worship and celebration. The offering made by fire on this day is a solemn assembly, a sacred gathering of the people before the Lord. The prohibition against doing any servile work on this day emphasizes the importance of focusing solely on God and His presence. Through these rituals, the people are reminded of their dependence on God, their need for His grace, and their commitment to serve Him wholeheartedly.
