Book of Leviticus - Chapter 22 - Verse 16

22:16
Or suffer them to bear the iniquity of trespass, when they eat their holy things: for I the LORD do sanctify them.

Meaning

In this verse from Leviticus, God is instructing the Israelites on the importance of following specific guidelines when it comes to consuming holy offerings. The verse emphasizes the seriousness of ensuring that those who partake in the holy things are ceremonially clean and free from sin. By allowing individuals who are impure or have committed trespasses to eat the holy offerings, they would be bearing the iniquity of their sins. This act would defile the sanctity of the offering and dishonor God. Therefore, God declares that only those who are sanctified by Him are permitted to partake in the holy things. This verse serves as a reminder to the Israelites to approach God's offerings with reverence and purity, showing respect for His holiness and authority.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Leviticus, the concept of sanctification is highlighted. The idea behind sanctification is that something or someone is set apart for holy use or dedicated to God. In this specific context, the verse is referring to priests who would eat the holy offerings of the Israelites. By partaking in these offerings, the priests were symbolically taking on the iniquity of the people, bearing the burden of their sins. This act served to sanctify the priests, consecrating them for their role in the service of God. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the importance of purity and holiness in the priestly duties. It also serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness between the sins of the people and the responsibilities of the priests. Through this act of sanctification, the priests were not only cleansing themselves but also taking on the sins of others in an effort to bring about reconciliation and atonement. This verse underscores the profound spiritual significance of the priestly duties and the sacrificial system in the religious practices of the Israelites.
