Book of Leviticus - Chapter 21 - Verse 21

21:21
No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire: he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Leviticus, it is stated that no man who has a physical blemish from the lineage of Aaron the priest is permitted to come near to offer sacrifices to the LORD. This restriction was put in place to uphold the holiness and purity of the offerings presented to God. The priests were seen as mediators between God and the people, and it was essential that they were without physical imperfections to symbolize their spiritual purity and worthiness to approach the altar. Blemishes were believed to be a sign of imperfection and impurity, and therefore those with such blemishes were deemed unfit to offer sacrifices to God. The bread mentioned in the verse symbolizes the offerings brought before God and it was crucial that they were presented by those who were deemed physically perfect. This verse highlights the importance of following strict guidelines and maintaining purity when approaching God with offerings.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest is mentioned as a disqualifying factor for offering sacrifices to the Lord. This highlights the significance of purity and wholeness when presenting offerings to God. The priesthood in ancient Israel was held to high standards, and any physical blemish or defect was seen as a sign of imperfection that rendered one unfit for this sacred duty. This principle of purity and holiness extends to the New Testament, where believers are called to present themselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1). The emphasis on bodily integrity reflects a broader theological theme of the importance of offering our best to God, both in terms of physical and spiritual wholeness. This verse serves as a reminder to approach God with reverence and honor, offering our whole selves in worship and service.

American Standard Version
