Book of Leviticus - Chapter 20 - Verse 5

20:5
Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.

Meaning

In this verse, the concept of setting one's face against someone is used to symbolize divine judgment and punishment. The phrase "commit whoredom with Molech" refers to the act of idol worship, specifically involving the pagan god Molech, who was known for child sacrifice. The consequences of engaging in such practices were severe, as the individual, their family, and all those who followed them were to be cut off from their people. This demonstrates the importance of remaining faithful to the one true God and avoiding the temptation of worshipping false idols. The verse serves as a warning against turning away from God and highlights the serious repercussions of indulging in sinful and idolatrous behavior. It reinforces the idea of God's justice and the need for obedience to His commandments to avoid facing His wrath.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse can be understood in the context of the Israelites' struggle with idolatry. The mention of committing whoredom with Molech reflects the Israelites' tendency to turn away from God and worship false gods, such as Molech, who was believed to demand child sacrifices. The consequences of engaging in such idolatrous practices are severe, as God declares that He will set His face against the man, his family, and all who follow in his ways. This emphasizes the seriousness of idolatry in the eyes of God and serves as a warning to the Israelites to remain faithful to Him alone. Additionally, the act of cutting off the man and his family signifies the idea of complete separation from God and His blessings. Through this verse, God makes it clear that idolatry will not be tolerated among His people and that there will be severe consequences for those who choose to worship false gods.

American Standard Version
