Book of Leviticus - Chapter 20 - Verse 18

20:18
And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he hath discovered her fountain, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people.

Meaning

In this verse from Leviticus 20:18, the text discusses the consequences of engaging in sexual relations with a woman while she is menstruating. The understanding behind this law is rooted in the idea of purity and cleanliness within the ancient Israelite culture. During menstruation, a woman was considered ritually impure due to the blood she was experiencing, and therefore sexual activity during this time was forbidden. By uncovering the woman's nakedness and coming into contact with her menstrual blood, the man is seen as defiling her and violating the laws of purity. The punishment for this act is severe, as both the man and the woman involved are to be cut off from their community. This indicates the seriousness with which these laws were viewed and the importance of maintaining purity in all aspects of life.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse which discusses the consequences of a man lying with a woman during her menstrual cycle, it is important to understand the context in which these laws were given to the ancient Israelites. In the Old Testament, such practices were considered unclean and impure, and were strictly forbidden by God. The act of uncovering a woman's nakedness during her menstrual period was seen as a violation of the laws of purity and holiness set forth by God. The act of uncovering her 'fountain' or her blood was symbolic of violating the sacredness of her body and the natural course of her cycle. The severity of the punishment, being cut off from among their people, emphasizes the importance of adhering to God's laws and maintaining purity within the community. This verse serves as a reminder of the holiness of the body and the importance of respecting the natural order established by God.
