Book of Leviticus - Chapter 16 - Verse 15

16:15
Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Leviticus, we see a ritual being described where the high priest is instructed to bring a sin offering in the form of a goat to atone for the sins of the people. The blood of this goat is to be brought into the innermost part of the Tabernacle, known as the Holy of Holies, and sprinkled on the mercy seat. The mercy seat was a golden cover for the Ark of the Covenant, representing the presence of God among the people. By sprinkling the blood on the mercy seat, the high priest was symbolically purifying and reconciling the people with God. This ritual was a means of seeking forgiveness and cleansing from sin, emphasizing the seriousness of atonement and the importance of seeking forgiveness from God.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see the intricate process of atonement for the people through the sin offering. The killing of the goat symbolizes the removal of sin, and the bringing of its blood within the veil represents the sanctity of the act, as only the high priest was allowed to enter this sacred space. The sprinkling of the blood upon the mercy seat signifies the covering of sins by God's mercy and grace. The parallel with the blood of the bullock emphasizes the seriousness and thoroughness of the atonement process. This verse highlights the importance of the blood sacrifices in the Old Testament as a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. The theological interpretation of this verse underscores the need for a perfect sacrifice to cleanse sins and reconcile humanity with God.
