Book of Leviticus - Chapter 15 - Verse 23

15:23
And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even.

Meaning

This verse from Leviticus 15:5 outlines the laws concerning ritual impurity in ancient Israel. According to this verse, if a woman with an abnormal discharge sits or lies on a bed or object, anyone who touches that bed or object will become ritually unclean until evening. In the context of the Israelites' religious practices, being ritually unclean meant that a person was temporarily unable to participate in sacred activities or enter the tabernacle. The purpose of these purity laws was to maintain cleanliness and holiness within the community and to set the Israelites apart from other nations. By following these regulations, the Israelites showed their devotion to God and their commitment to living according to His commandments. This verse served as a reminder of the importance of ritual purity in the religious life of ancient Israel and the need to adhere to these laws to maintain a close relationship with God.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Leviticus, the concept of ritual impurity is described in detail, particularly in relation to a woman's menstrual cycle. The word "unclean" in this context refers to a state of ritual impurity rather than actual physical dirtiness. The act of touching the bed or any object where the woman has sat can transfer this impurity to the person who touches it. This ritual impurity lasted until the evening and required specific purification rituals to be performed. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the importance of purity and cleanliness in the context of ritual worship in ancient Israel. It highlights the significance of following specific rules and regulations set out by God in order to maintain a state of holiness. Word studies on terms such as "unclean" and "toucheth" can provide deeper insights into the cultural and religious practices of the Israelites during that time, shedding light on the significance of maintaining purity in the presence of God.
