Book of Leviticus - Chapter 13 - Verse 28

13:28
And if the bright spot stay in his place, and spread not in the skin, but it be somewhat dark; it is a rising of the burning, and the priest shall pronounce him clean: for it is an inflammation of the burning.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Leviticus, the regulations regarding skin diseases and infections are outlined for the Israelites. The verse explains that if a bright spot appears on a person's skin but does not spread, and the skin around it is somewhat dark, then it is most likely a benign skin condition known as a rising of the burning. The priest is instructed to pronounce the individual clean in this case, as it is simply an inflammation caused by a burn. This demonstrates the meticulous attention to detail and concern for the health and well-being of the community that is evident throughout the laws of Leviticus. By closely examining any skin abnormalities and determining whether they are infectious or harmful, the community can prevent the spread of diseases and ensure the overall health of its members. This verse highlights the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions in the ancient Israelite society, reflecting the value placed on physical health and cleanliness.

Theological Overview

One of the key theological interpretations of this verse lies in the importance of physical health and cleanliness within the community. In ancient times, skin diseases were often seen as a manifestation of spiritual impurity or sin. In this particular case, the bright spot on the skin was closely examined by the priest to determine if it was a sign of a contagious disease or a mere inflammation. The fact that the spot did not spread and remained somewhat dark indicated that it was not a cause for concern, leading the priest to declare the individual clean. This emphasizes the role of the priest as a mediator between the people and God, ensuring that the community remained free from physical and spiritual harm. Furthermore, the meticulous attention to detail in diagnosing skin conditions highlights the importance of taking care of one's body and preventing the spread of illnesses within the society.

American Standard Version

And if the bright spot stay in its place, and be not spread in the skin, but be dim; it is the rising of the burning, and the priest shall pronounce him clean: for it is the scar of the burning.
