Book of Judges - Chapter 9 - Verse 51

9:51
But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.

Meaning

When faced with danger or threats from outside forces, the people of the city sought refuge in a strong tower situated within their walls. This tower served as a symbol of protection and safety, a fortified structure where both men and women could seek shelter. By shutting themselves in and retreating to the top of the tower, they were able to defend themselves against any impending danger. This verse highlights the importance of seeking refuge and finding a place of safety in times of trouble. It also emphasizes the idea of unity and collective action, as all the inhabitants of the city came together to seek shelter in the tower. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder of the need for community solidarity and the strength that can be found in coming together to face challenges.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of the verse "But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower" can be seen as a symbolic representation of seeking refuge in God during times of trouble. The tower within the city serves as a place of safety and security, where the people fled to escape harm. This can be seen as analogous to finding shelter in the Lord during difficult circumstances, trusting in His protection and provision. The act of shutting themselves in and ascending to the top of the tower can be interpreted as a physical manifestation of faith and reliance on God's strength. The imagery of the tower as a place of refuge echoes similar biblical themes found in Psalms and Proverbs, where God is described as a stronghold and a fortress for His people.

American Standard Version
