Book of Judges - Chapter 9 - Verse 46

9:46
And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.

Meaning

Upon hearing the news of Abimelech's victory over Shechem, the men of the tower of Shechem sought refuge in the temple of their god, Berith. The tower of Shechem was a fortified structure within the city where influential people resided. By entering the hold of the house of the god Berith, they were likely seeking protection from any potential retaliation or harm that might come their way as a result of their association with the slain Gaal. The choice to seek sanctuary in the temple indicates that the men of the tower of Shechem were placing their trust in their deity for safety and security in the midst of the turmoil and uncertainty that had befallen their city. It also demonstrates the religious and cultural significance of the temple in their society, as a place of refuge and divine protection. This action highlights the complex interplay between faith, power, and politics in the ancient city of Shechem.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see the men of the tower of Shechem seeking refuge in the house of the god Berith. The theological interpretation of this action is significant as it reflects the common practice of seeking safety and protection in times of distress. The choice to seek shelter in a pagan temple raises questions about the faith of the men and their reliance on false gods instead of the one true God. The word "Berith" means covenant, which adds another layer of symbolism to the verse. The men may have been seeking protection under the belief that they were entering into a covenant with this god. However, this action ultimately demonstrates their lack of trust in the Lord to provide for them. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and seeking refuge in idols.

American Standard Version
