Book of Judges - Chapter 7 - Verse 6

7:6
And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.

Meaning

When Gideon was preparing to go to battle against the Midianites, God instructed him to reduce the size of his army to demonstrate His power and show that victory would come from Him, not from the strength of the Israelite army. The men were tested at a stream, where those who lapped the water with their hands were selected to fight, while those who knelt down to drink were sent home. The three hundred men who lapped the water were chosen because they remained vigilant and prepared for battle, keeping their eyes on the enemy even as they drank. On the other hand, those who knelt to drink demonstrated a lack of awareness, focusing instead on their own comfort and not on the impending battle. This verse serves as a reminder to stay focused on God's purpose and be alert to the spiritual battles we face, rather than being distracted by worldly comforts.

Theological Overview

One of the key theological interpretations of this verse can be seen in the contrast between the three hundred men who lapped water and the rest of the people who bowed down to drink. The act of lapping water by putting their hand to their mouths symbolizes alertness and readiness for battle. These three hundred men were chosen by God based on their attentiveness and quick reaction to their surroundings. On the other hand, the act of bowing down to drink water can be seen as a sign of vulnerability and lack of awareness. By choosing only the three hundred men who lapped water, God was able to demonstrate his power and reveal the importance of being vigilant and prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

American Standard Version
