Book of Judges - Chapter 6 - Verse 10

6:10
And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

Meaning

In this verse, we see God reminding the Israelites that He is their one true God and they should not fear the gods of the Amorites, who were the inhabitants of the land they dwelt in. The Amorites worshipped false gods and idols, but God was calling His chosen people to remain faithful to Him alone. By disobeying His voice and following after the gods of the Amorites, the Israelites were straying from God's commands and falling into idolatry.

This verse serves as a reminder to believers today to put their trust in God alone and not in the false gods of this world. It emphasizes the importance of obedience to God's voice and commands, rather than following after the worldly idols that can lead us astray. By focusing on God as our true source of strength and guidance, we can overcome the temptations of idol worship and remain faithful to Him in all circumstances.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, there is a strong theological message regarding the exclusive authority and sovereignty of the LORD, who identifies himself as the God of the Israelites. The command not to fear the gods of the Amorites highlights the temptation faced by the Israelites to turn away from their true God and follow the practices of the foreign inhabitants in the land they dwell in. The concept of fear, in this context, extends beyond mere trepidation to encompass obedience and loyalty to the one true God. The failure of the Israelites to obey the voice of the LORD, despite his clear instruction, serves as a warning against the consequences of idolatry and disobedience. Through a deeper word study, one can explore the nuances of the original Hebrew text to uncover the layers of meaning embedded in the command to fear not and obey the voice of the LORD.
