Book of Judges - Chapter 3 - Verse 15

3:15
But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

Meaning

When the children of Israel found themselves oppressed and crying out to the LORD for deliverance, God answered their prayers by raising up a man named Ehud. Ehud was a left-handed Benjamite chosen by God to be the deliverer of Israel from the oppressive rule of Eglon, the king of Moab. Ehud's left-handedness was significant because it allowed him to conceal a dagger on his right thigh, a rare and unexpected tactic that ultimately led to the defeat of the Moabites. With God's guidance, Ehud was able to successfully carry out his mission of assassinating Eglon and freeing the Israelites from their bondage. As a result of Ehud's bravery and faithfulness to God, the children of Israel were able to present a tribute to Eglon's kingdom, signaling their victory and newfound independence from Moab. This story serves as a powerful reminder of God's faithfulness to His people and His ability to use unexpected individuals to accomplish His purposes.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see a powerful theological theme of God's faithfulness to his people, the children of Israel. Despite their repeated disobedience and turning away from God, whenever the Israelites cried out to the Lord in their distress, He raised up a deliverer for them. The story of Ehud, the left-handed Benjamite, serves as a reminder of how God uses unexpected and unconventional methods to deliver his people from their enemies. This verse also highlights the importance of obedience to God's commands, as Ehud was able to successfully carry out his mission of delivering a message to the king of Moab because he was obedient to God's leading. Through this account, we can see God's sovereignty and faithfulness in action, as He continues to fulfill his promises and provide for his people even in the midst of their disobedience and challenges.
