Book of Judges - Chapter 2 - Verse 20

2:20
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

Meaning

When the verse mentions the anger of the LORD being hot against Israel, it is communicating God's displeasure with the actions of the Israelites. The reason for this anger is due to the people's continual disobedience and failure to uphold the covenant that God had made with their ancestors. The covenant was a sacred agreement between God and the Israelites, outlining the terms of their relationship and the responsibilities they had towards Him. By disobeying His commandments and refusing to listen to His guidance, the Israelites had broken this covenant and gone against the will of God. As a result, God's anger was kindled against them, and a consequence was imminent. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of obeying God's commandments and honoring the agreements made with Him, as failing to do so can lead to divine judgment and discipline.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, we see a powerful image of God's anger directed towards the nation of Israel for their disobedience and failure to uphold the covenant established with their ancestors. The phrase "the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel" emphasizes the intensity of God's displeasure with the people's actions. The word "hot" conveys a sense of burning fury and righteous indignation in response to their betrayal.
