Book of Judges - Chapter 2 - Verse 19

2:19
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

Meaning

In this verse, we see the continued cycle of apostasy and idolatry among the Israelites. The Israelites had a history of turning away from God and following after false gods whenever a judge or leader died. Despite experiencing the faithfulness and power of the one true God, they chose to worship idols instead. This pattern of behavior demonstrated the Israelites' stubbornness and disobedience. They not only failed to learn from the mistakes of their ancestors but also exceeded them in their rebellion. The verse serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and the importance of staying faithful to Him. It highlights the continual need for repentance and a return to the true worship of God, rather than following after the fleeting pleasures of the world.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the phrase "corrupted themselves more than their fathers" is significant in highlighting the downward spiral of the Israelites. The word "corrupted" indicates a deliberate turning away from righteousness and towards sin. This can be seen as a theological interpretation of the consequences of spiritual rebellion and idolatry. The word "stubborn" in the phrase "stubborn way" also emphasizes the hardness of heart and disobedience of the people towards God's commands. The repeated pattern of the Israelites forsaking God and turning to idol worship serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of straying from true faith. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of staying faithful to God and not being swayed by the temptations of the world.

American Standard Version

But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.
