Book of Judges - Chapter 19 - Verse 11

19:11
And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

Meaning

As the travelers reached Jebus in the late evening, one of the servants suggested to his master that they should stop and lodge in the city of the Jebusites for the night. This verse highlights the importance of finding shelter and rest during a journey, especially when the day is coming to an end. In ancient times, travelers often relied on the hospitality of others in unfamiliar places, seeking refuge and safety within the walls of a city. The servant's suggestion to turn in for the night shows the practical wisdom of seeking lodging when necessary, as well as the importance of prioritizing rest and rejuvenation during a long journey. It also serves as a reminder of the care and provision that God offers to His people, even when they are far from home and in need of refuge.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse could focus on the importance of trust in God's provision and protection. The mention of the day being far spent implies that the characters were at a vulnerable point, as traveling in the dark was risky in ancient times. However, the servant suggests turning in to the city of the Jebusites for lodging, showing a willingness to seek refuge in an unfamiliar place. This could be seen as a demonstration of faith in God's ability to keep them safe, even in a city inhabited by foreigners. Additionally, the act of turning to the city of the Jebusites may symbolize the idea of turning to God in times of need, trusting in His guidance and protection. Word studies on terms like "Jebus" and "Jebusites" could reveal deeper meanings related to the context of the verse, shedding light on the cultural and historical significance of these references within the narrative.
