Book of Judges - Chapter 18 - Verse 19

18:19
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

Meaning

The verse in question comes from the book of Judges in the Old Testament and is part of a story where the tribe of Dan is looking for a priest to lead them. In this verse, the Danites are speaking to a Levite who they want to be their priest and father figure. They ask him whether it is better for him to serve as a priest to one man's household or to an entire tribe and family in Israel. This question poses a choice between serving in a smaller, more intimate setting versus a larger, more influential role. The Danites are trying to persuade the Levite to join them by appealing to his sense of importance and impact. By asking this question, they are highlighting the significance and honor that comes with serving a larger group of people, suggesting that it would be more beneficial for the Levite to be their priest rather than just serving one individual family. Overall, this verse reflects the importance of leadership and the impact that individuals can have on a community.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Judges, the term "father" likely signifies a paternal figure who provides both spiritual and practical guidance. The concept of a priest in ancient Israel was not limited to religious duties but also encompassed leadership and decision-making roles within the community. The phrase "a priest unto the house of one man" can be interpreted as serving a single household or individual, whereas being a priest to a tribe and a family in Israel signifies a broader scope of influence and responsibility. This passage raises the question of the value of influence and the scale of impact one can have in different roles. It emphasizes the idea of the importance of community and the greater good over individual pursuits. The theological implication here is the significance of serving a larger group of people with dedication and wisdom, as opposed to focusing solely on personal gain or ambition.
