Book of Judges - Chapter 17 - Verse 7

17:7
And there was a young man out of Bethlehemjudah of the family of Judah, who was a Levite, and he sojourned there.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Judges introduces us to a young man from Bethlehemjudah, a town belonging to the tribe of Judah. The fact that he is identified as a Levite tells us that he is from the priestly tribe of Levi. The Levites were not allotted a specific portion of land when the Israelites entered Canaan, as their inheritance was to serve as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle. This young man chose to live in Bethlehemjudah, most likely to fulfill his priestly duties or seek employment in the town. The mention of his family being from Judah emphasizes his connection to the tribe known for its leadership and royalty. By sojourning in Bethlehemjudah, he may have been seeking to further his career or serve the people in a place where his Levitical lineage could be appreciated and utilized.

Theological Overview

This verse from the Book of Judges introduces us to a young man from Bethlehemjudah, a town in the territory of Judah. What is particularly interesting about this individual is that he is identified as both a member of the tribe of Judah and a Levite. The intertwining of these two lineages is significant within the context of ancient Israelite society. The Levites were traditionally set apart for religious service, serving as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle and later, the temple. The fact that this young man was both a Levite and from the tribe of Judah highlights his unique status and may hint at his potential role or significance in the narrative to come. The use of the term "sojourned" suggests that he was staying temporarily in Bethlehemjudah, perhaps indicating that he was serving in a particular religious capacity or fulfilling a specific duty in the region at that time.

American Standard Version
