Book of Judges - Chapter 11 - Verse 17

11:17
Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

Meaning

In this verse, we see the nation of Israel facing obstacles as they try to pass through the lands of Edom and Moab. The act of sending messengers to request safe passage was a common custom in ancient times, especially when crossing through another territory. However, both the king of Edom and the king of Moab refused to grant Israel permission to pass through their lands. This refusal led to Israel staying in Kadesh, a place near the border of Edom and Moab, for a period of time. This verse shows the importance of seeking permission and respecting the boundaries of others, even in times of need. It also highlights the struggles and challenges that the Israelites faced as they journeyed towards the Promised Land, reminding readers of the difficult path that they had to walk before reaching their destination.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the theme of seeking permission and facing rejection. Israel, as a nation, exemplifies the importance of diplomacy and humility in seeking to pass through the lands of their neighbors. Their efforts to reach out to the kings of Edom and Moab signify a desire for peaceful relations and a willingness to abide by the rules of hospitality. However, the response of the kings reflect a lack of cooperation and goodwill, leading to Israel's prolonged stay in Kadesh. This narrative prompts readers to consider the implications of rejection and the importance of seeking permission and showing respect in dealings with others. It also serves as a reminder of the challenges that come with navigating relationships and borders, emphasizing the need for patience and perseverance in the face of obstacles.
