Book of Joshua - Chapter 6 - Verse 7

6:7
And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.

Meaning

In this verse, Joshua instructs the people to pass on and circle the city of Jericho. This act of circling the city was a strategic military tactic employed by the Israelites under the guidance of God. By having the armed men lead the procession before the ark of the Lord, they were symbolizing their trust in God's guidance and protection during the impending battle. The ark of the Lord was a sacred object representing God's presence among his people, and by having it at the forefront, the Israelites were acknowledging that their victory would come from God. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of faith and obedience in carrying out God's plans. It also highlights the significance of seeking God's direction and protection in times of conflict or adversity. As readers continue to explore the story of Jericho in the Bible, they will see how God's power and faithfulness are demonstrated through the obedience of the Israelites.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from Joshua instructing the people to circle the city of Jericho with armed men leading the way before the ark of the LORD is that it demonstrates the importance of following God's instructions in faith. God had promised to deliver the city of Jericho into the hands of the Israelites, but they had to obey His command without fully understanding how it would come to pass. By having the armed men lead the way, the Israelites were not relying on their own strength or military prowess, but on the power of God to bring about victory. This passage can be seen as a lesson in trust and obedience, showing that God's ways are not always our ways, but they are always ultimately for our good and His glory.
