4:5
And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:

Meaning

In this verse, Joshua is instructing the Israelites to pass over the Jordan River before the ark of the Lord their God. The Jordan River was a significant geographical barrier standing between the Israelites and the Promised Land. By commanding the people to pass over before the ark of the Lord, Joshua is emphasizing the importance of following God's guidance and leading in their journey towards their inheritance. The ark represented the presence of God among his people, and by following it, the Israelites were demonstrating their faith and obedience to God. Additionally, Joshua instructs each man to take a stone upon his shoulder, symbolizing the importance of remembering God's faithfulness and mighty works. These stones were to be a reminder of the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River and a witness to future generations of God's power and provision. Lastly, the stones were to be taken according to the number of tribes of the children of Israel, signifying unity and solidarity among God's chosen people. This verse serves as a reminder to trust in God, remember His faithfulness, and walk in obedience as we journey towards the promises He has for us.

Theological Overview

Joshua's command to the Israelites to pass over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of Jordan and take up a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, holds deep theological significance. The crossing of the Jordan River echoes the crossing of the Red Sea, symbolizing a new beginning and a covenant renewal with God. The act of each man carrying a stone on his shoulder symbolizes the burden of sin and the weight of responsibility that each individual carries. The stones would later be set up as a memorial to commemorate this miraculous event and serve as a reminder of God's faithfulness to the Israelites. Through this act, Joshua demonstrated the importance of obedience, faith, and remembrance of God's past deeds in the lives of His people. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes God's sovereignty, the importance of unity among believers, and the significance of remembering and honoring God's faithfulness in our lives.
