Book of Joshua - Chapter 3 - Verse 15

3:15
And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)

Meaning

When the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant reached the Jordan River, it was during the time of harvest, when the river usually overflowed its banks. The significance of this moment lies in the faith and obedience of the Israelites. The Ark of the Covenant symbolized the presence of God among His people, and as the priests stepped into the overflowing river, it was a demonstration of their trust in God's power to fulfill His promises. This event marked a pivotal moment in Israel's history, as it led to the miraculous parting of the Jordan River, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry land into the Promised Land. It serves as a reminder that when we step out in faith and obedience, God will make a way for us, even in the midst of overwhelming obstacles. This verse illustrates the importance of trusting in God's sovereignty and following His lead, even when faced with daunting challenges.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the crossing of the Jordan River by the Israelites is described. The ark of the covenant, representing the presence of God, was carried by the priests into the water. This act symbolized the Israelites' trust in God to lead them into the promised land. The overflowing banks of the Jordan during the harvest season added to the difficulty of the crossing, highlighting the faith required of the Israelites to step into the water. The act of the priests' feet touching the water's edge symbolizes the obedience and faith required to follow God's commands, even when faced with obstacles.
