Book of Joshua - Chapter 19 - Verse 51

19:51
These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.

Meaning

These words from the book of Joshua describe an important event where the land of Canaan was being divided among the tribes of Israel. Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of Israel gathered in Shiloh to determine the inheritance of each tribe by casting lots. This division of land was a critical moment in Israel's history as it marked the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham to give his descendants the land of Canaan. By dividing the land in the presence of the Lord at the door of the tabernacle, the leaders of Israel acknowledged that this allocation was not based on human decisions alone, but on the will of God. The completion of this division signified the end of a long journey for the Israelites, as they finally settled in the land that had been promised to them for generations. This verse reminds us of the faithfulness of God in fulfilling his promises to his people and the importance of seeking his guidance in every decision we make.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Joshua, we see Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of Israel dividing the land of Canaan as an inheritance by casting lots in Shiloh before the Lord. The use of the term "inheritance" highlights the significance of the promised land to the Israelites as a gift from God. The casting of lots was a method used in ancient Israel to receive divine guidance or make decisions, emphasizing the belief in God's sovereignty over the allocation of land. This process also reinforces the importance of seeking God's will in the distribution of resources and responsibilities among the tribes of Israel. The location of the division at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation symbolizes the central role of God in the Israelites' governance and territorial boundaries. Ultimately, this verse underscores the theological themes of trust in God's provision and the importance of seeking divine guidance in matters of inheritance and territorial distribution.
