Book of Joshua - Chapter 18 - Verse 19

18:19
And the border passed along to the side of Bethhoglah northward: and the outgoings of the border were at the north bay of the salt sea at the south end of Jordan: this was the south coast.

Meaning

In this verse, the borders of the Land of Canaan are being described in detail. Bethhoglah is mentioned as a reference point for the border, indicating a specific location along the border's path. The border moves northward from Bethhoglah towards the north bay of the salt sea, which is believed to be the Dead Sea. The mention of the Jordan River on the south end of the sea further specifies the boundary line. This detailed description of the border helps to establish the extent of the land allotted to the tribes of Israel when they entered the Promised Land. The precise nature of the borders was crucial in defining the territories of each tribe and ensuring fair distribution of land among the people. This verse serves as a geographical marker, providing important information for understanding the division of the land according to biblical texts.

Theological Overview

When looking at the theological interpretation of Joshua 15:5, we can see that the mention of the border passing along the side of Bethhoglah northward symbolizes the boundaries that God sets for His people. Just as the Israelites were given specific borders for their land, God has also set boundaries for us in terms of our behavior, relationships, and responsibilities. Similarly, the reference to the outgoings of the border at the north bay of the salt sea could be seen as a reminder of the importance of staying within the confines of God's will, as straying outside of His boundaries can lead to pitfalls and destruction, just as the salt sea represents barrenness and desolation. The mention of Jordan in the verse could also signify crossing over from one state to another, symbolizing a transition or transformation in one's journey with God. Overall, Joshua 15:5 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God's commands and staying within the boundaries He has set for us.
