Book of Joshua - Chapter 18 - Verse 13

18:13
And the border went over from thence toward Luz, to the side of Luz, which is Bethel, southward; and the border descended to Atarothadar, near the hill that lieth on the south side of the nether Bethhoron.

Meaning

In this verse, the border of a specific location is being described in relation to various landmarks such as Luz, which is also known as Bethel, and Atarothadar. Borders were critically important in ancient times as they demarcated territories and served as a means of protection and control. The mention of Luz, now renamed Bethel, has symbolic significance as Bethel means "house of God" in Hebrew. This name change reflects the transformation and rededication of the city to a place of worship. Atarothadar, near the hill south of Bethhoron, is another important geographical marker that helps to define the border clearly. Understanding the significance of these locations helps to contextualize the historical and religious context in which this verse is situated. It also highlights the meticulous attention to detail in the documentation of boundaries in ancient times.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, there is a mention of Luz, which is later identified as Bethel. Bethel holds spiritual significance in the Bible as it was a location where Jacob had a powerful encounter with God. The name Bethel means “house of God,” signifying a place of divine presence and connection. Therefore, when the border of the land passed through Luz towards Bethel, it symbolizes a movement towards a place of spiritual significance and encounter with God. Additionally, the mention of Atarothadar and Bethhoron could be interpreted as references to specific landmarks within the region, possibly indicating boundaries or important areas within the territory. These locations may hold historical or theological significance that could provide further insight into the context of the verse and its implications for the people of Israel during that time.

American Standard Version

And the border passed along from thence to Luz, to the side of Luz (the same is Beth-el), southward; and the border went down to Ataroth-addar, by the mountain that lieth on the south of Beth-horon the nether.
