Book of Joshua - Chapter 15 - Verse 5

15:5
And the east border was the salt sea, even unto the end of Jordan. And their border in the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the uttermost part of Jordan:

Meaning

This verse describes the geographical boundaries of the land that was given to the tribe of Judah during the time of Joshua. The east border of their territory was the Dead Sea, also known as the Salt Sea, which is a landlocked body of water with high levels of salt content. The eastern border extended all the way to the Jordan River, which marked the end of their land on that side. Moving to the north, their territory reached from the bay of the sea, which could refer to either the Mediterranean Sea or the Dead Sea depending on the interpretation, to the farthest point of the Jordan River. These specific descriptions helped the tribe of Judah understand the extent of the land that was allotted to them and establish their borders with neighboring tribes. This verse serves as a historical record of the divisions of land among the twelve tribes of Israel and showcases the importance of boundaries in ancient societies.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of the east border being the Salt Sea and the Jordan River symbolizes the boundaries of the Promised Land as described in the Bible. The Salt Sea, also known as the Dead Sea, is a place of desolation and judgment, representing the consequences of sin. The Jordan River, on the other hand, is a symbol of new beginnings and the crossing over into a new chapter in the lives of the Israelites. The north quarter border being from the bay of the sea at the uttermost part of the Jordan signifies the vastness and completeness of God's provision for His people. It emphasizes the importance of staying within the boundaries set by God, as they represent His protection and guidance. Understanding the geographical references in this verse helps illuminate the spiritual significance of the chosen landmarks in relation to the Israelites' journey to inherit the Promised Land.
