1:17
According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Joshua shows the Israelites' commitment to following the leadership of Joshua, just as they had followed Moses. By stating, "According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee," the Israelites are expressing their willingness to obey Joshua's commands just as they had obeyed Moses' commands in the past. This demonstrates their belief in the authority and guidance of their leaders appointed by God. The Israelites also acknowledge the importance of having the presence of the Lord with Joshua, just as He had been with Moses. This acknowledgment shows their understanding that without God's presence and guidance, their leaders would not be able to lead them effectively. By making this declaration, the Israelites are reaffirming their faith in God's continuous presence and support, ensuring their trust in Joshua's leadership. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of faith, obedience, and trust in following God's appointed leaders.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, the Israelites express their loyalty and commitment to Joshua as their new leader. By acknowledging Joshua's authority in the same manner they hearkened unto Moses, they affirm their obedience and trust in his leadership. The phrase "hearkened unto Moses in all things" underscores the Israelites' obedience to the divine guidance given through Moses. This indicates a pattern of listening and following the instructions given by their previous leader, Moses, which they now pledge to continue under Joshua's leadership. The importance of divine presence and support is also highlighted in this verse, as the Israelites recognize that the presence of the Lord was with Moses, and they now seek the same divine favor for Joshua as he assumes the role of leading them into the promised land. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the continuity of God's guidance and presence throughout the leadership transition from Moses to Joshua, underscoring the faithfulness and loyalty required of the Israelites in following God's chosen leader.
