Book of Joshua - Chapter 1 - Verse 15

1:15
Until the LORD have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD'S servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising.

Meaning

In this verse, Moses is speaking to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh, who had requested to settle on the east side of the Jordan River instead of entering the promised land with the rest of the Israelites. Moses reminds them that they must first help their fellow Israelites conquer the land of Canaan and settle in it before they can return to their own land and enjoy its blessings. This serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and solidarity among the tribes of Israel, showing that they must support each other in fulfilling God's promises and securing their inheritance. By waiting for their brethren to also receive their portion of the land, they demonstrate loyalty and obedience to God's plan for the nation as a whole. This verse emphasizes the principle of working together for the common good, rather than seeking individual gain at the expense of others. It highlights the interconnectedness of the Israelite community and the need to prioritize collective welfare over personal desires.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, there is a theological interpretation that speaks to the concept of rest. The idea of rest here signifies a time of peace and prosperity that the Lord provides for His people. It is not just a physical rest but a spiritual rest as well, where God's people can trust in Him fully and enjoy the blessings He has promised. The word "rest" also connects to the theme of inheritance, as the Israelites are reminded that the land they possess is a gift from God. This verse encourages believers to wait patiently for God to fulfill His promises and to trust that He will provide rest and blessings in His perfect timing.

American Standard Version

until Jehovah have given your brethren rest, as [he hath given] you, and they also have possessed the land which Jehovah your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and possess it, which Moses the servant of Jehovah gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising.
