Book of John - Chapter 8 - Verse 38

8:38
I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

Meaning

When Jesus says, "I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father," he is addressing a group of people who are questioning his authority and his teachings. Jesus is making a distinction between his relationship with God the Father and the relationship that the people he is speaking to have with their own "father." By saying that he speaks what he has seen with his Father, Jesus is asserting that his words and actions are directly from God and are in alignment with God's will. On the other hand, he implies that the actions of the people he is addressing are influenced by a different source - their "father." This can be interpreted as a contrast between following God and following worldly desires, sin, or false teachings. Jesus is challenging his listeners to examine the source of their words and actions and to consider whether they are aligned with God's truth.

Theological Overview

John 8:38 features Jesus explaining to the Jews that He speaks what He has seen with His Father, while they do what they have seen with their father. This verse showcases the contrast between Jesus, who is aligned with God the Father, and the Jews, who are following the ways of their earthly father, likely referring to the devil. The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the importance of spiritual lineage and affiliation. By claiming to speak what He has seen with His Father, Jesus asserts His divine connection and authority. The word 'seen' in this context can symbolize spiritual insight and revelation, emphasizing Jesus' intimate knowledge of the Father's will. Through word studies on 'seen', the depth of Jesus' relationship with the Father is illuminated, showcasing His unique position as the Son of God. This verse serves as a reminder to believers to align themselves with God and His truth, rather than being led astray by the influences of the world.
