Book of John - Chapter 7 - Verse 35

7:35
Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

Meaning

When the Jews questioned among themselves where Jesus would go that they could not find him, they were speculating about his intentions and potential audience. In this verse, the Jews ponder if Jesus was planning on going to the dispersed Jews among the Gentiles and teach them, or even teach the Gentiles themselves. This shows the internal conflict and confusion among the Jews regarding Jesus' teachings and mission. It also highlights their skepticism and disbelief in Jesus as the awaited Messiah, as they question his motives and the inclusivity of his message. This verse reflects the cultural and religious divide that existed between the Jews and Gentiles at that time, as well as the tension surrounding Jesus' ministry and his outreach to different groups of people. Overall, this verse sheds light on the complexities of Jesus' mission and the reactions of those around him.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the Jews are contemplating the whereabouts of Jesus, wondering if he would go to the dispersed among the Gentiles to teach them. The phrase "dispersed among the Gentiles" refers to the Jewish people who had been scattered throughout the Roman Empire due to various historical events such as the Babylonian exile. The Jews viewed these individuals as being far removed from the Jewish faith and customs, hence their curiosity about Jesus potentially reaching out to them. This verse highlights the theological tension between the Jewish community and the Gentiles, as well as the concept of Jesus' ministry extending beyond the confines of traditional Jewish boundaries. The word "Gentiles" in this context refers to non-Jewish individuals, signifying a broader audience that Jesus' teachings could potentially reach. Overall, this verse prompts readers to reflect on the inclusivity of Jesus' message and the expansive reach of his teachings beyond cultural and societal divisions.
