Book of John - Chapter 6 - Verse 53

6:53
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Meaning

When Jesus said, "Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you," he was using symbolic language to explain a spiritual truth to his disciples. This statement is a metaphor for the importance of accepting Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, where he gave his body and blood for the redemption of humanity. In Christian theology, partaking in the Eucharist, also known as communion, is a way to remember and participate in the sacrifice of Jesus. By eating the bread, which represents his body, and drinking the wine, which represents his blood, believers are symbolically acknowledging their faith in Jesus as the source of eternal life. This verse emphasizes the central role that Jesus plays in the spiritual nourishment and sustenance of his followers, highlighting the significance of his sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the importance of partaking in the sacrament of communion. In many Christian traditions, the act of eating the bread and drinking the wine during the Eucharist is believed to symbolize the spiritual nourishment received through Christ's sacrifice on the cross. By participating in communion, believers are reminded of their dependence on Christ for spiritual sustenance and eternal life. The phrase "eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood" may be understood metaphorically as a call to fully embrace and internalize the teachings and sacrifice of Jesus. Some theologians also see this statement as a foreshadowing of the institution of the Lord's Supper, where Jesus instructs his disciples to remember him through the bread and wine. Additionally, word studies on the original Greek or Aramaic terms used in this verse can shed light on the nuances of Jesus' message, providing deeper insight into the significance of his words for believers.

American Standard Version
