Book of John - Chapter 6 - Verse 28

6:28
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

Meaning

When the people asked Jesus what they should do to work the works of God, they were seeking guidance on how to live a life that is pleasing to God. In this verse, Jesus is reminding his followers that doing the works of God is not just about performing miracles or grand acts of service, but rather about living a life of faith and obedience. To work the works of God is to believe in Jesus and follow his teachings, showing love and compassion to others, and living a life of integrity and righteousness. Jesus goes on to explain that the work of God is to believe in him as the Son of God, the one whom God has sent to save humanity. Therefore, for believers, working the works of God means putting their faith in Jesus and living a life that reflects his teachings and example.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the people asked Jesus what they needed to do in order to perform the works of God. This question delves into the theological concept of faith and works. While some theological interpretations emphasize the importance of good works as a demonstration of one's faith, others argue that faith alone is sufficient for salvation. The interaction between faith and works is a complex theological issue that has been debated throughout Christian history. Additionally, a word study of the phrase "works of God" may shed light on the specific actions or behaviors that are pleasing to God. By examining the original language and context of the verse, one can gain a deeper understanding of the responsibilities of believers and the nature of God's kingdom.
