6:24
When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

Meaning

When the people saw that Jesus and his disciples were not there, they decided to take a ship and travel to Capernaum in search of Jesus. This action demonstrates the strong desire and determination of the people to find Jesus and be in His presence. The people had witnessed Jesus perform miracles and teach with authority, so they were eager to seek Him out and learn more from Him. By making the effort to travel to Capernaum, they were showing their commitment to following Jesus and being close to Him.

This verse also highlights the significance of Jesus' presence in the lives of those who seek Him. The people recognized that being in the presence of Jesus was important and that He had something valuable to offer them. They were willing to go the extra mile, quite literally in this case, to be united with Him. This verse serves as a reminder to us that seeking Jesus and being in His presence is something worth pursuing with dedication and fervor.

Overall, this verse illustrates the deep yearning of the people to find Jesus and the importance of being in His presence. It also emphasizes the idea that seeking Jesus is a worthwhile endeavor that requires effort and determination. By traveling to Capernaum to search for Jesus, the people exemplified their commitment to following Him and learning from His teachings.

Theological Overview

One interesting theological interpretation of the verse "When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus," is the concept of seeking Jesus in times of confusion and uncertainty. The actions of the people in this verse can be seen as symbolic of humanity's constant search for meaning and guidance in the midst of turmoil. Just as the people in the verse sought out Jesus in Capernaum, we are called to seek out Jesus in our own lives when we are faced with challenges and difficulties. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of turning to Jesus for comfort and guidance in times of need. Additionally, a word study of the phrase "took shipping" could shed light on the significance of physical movement in the spiritual journey. The act of getting into a boat and traveling to find Jesus can be seen as a metaphor for the journey of faith, in which believers must actively seek out God's presence in their lives.

American Standard Version
