Book of John - Chapter 5 - Verse 38

5:38
And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is addressing a crowd of people who claim to believe in him but do not truly have faith in his teachings. He is highlighting the importance of having his word abiding within one's heart and soul. Without internalizing and truly understanding his teachings, one cannot claim to have a genuine belief in him. Jesus is emphasizing the significance of not just outwardly professing faith, but also living out his word in one's everyday life. By not accepting and abiding by his word, one is essentially rejecting the messenger (whom he hath sent) and ultimately rejecting Jesus himself. This verse serves as a reminder to believers to not just pay lip service to Jesus, but to truly embody his teachings and let his word guide their actions and beliefs.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse, "And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not," we see a clear emphasis on the importance of belief and faith in receiving God's word. The verse highlights the idea that if one does not believe in the one whom God has sent, then His word does not abide in them. This speaks to the necessity of having a receptive heart and mind to truly understand and internalize the teachings of God. Additionally, the verse prompts reflection on the concept of obedience and submission to God's chosen messengers. By rejecting the one whom God has sent, individuals are ultimately rejecting God Himself.

Furthermore, a word study on the term "abiding" in this context can provide further insight into the implications of having God's word dwelling within a person. The term suggests a sense of continual presence and influence, indicating that God's word should not only be received momentarily but should remain a constant guide and authority in one's life. Therefore, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of faith, belief, and obedience in order to have a deep and enduring relationship with God and His teachings.
