Book of John - Chapter 5 - Verse 13

5:13
And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

Meaning

After Jesus healed the man at the pool of Bethesda, the man did not know who had healed him because Jesus had already left the scene. This demonstrates Jesus' humility and selflessness, as he did not seek recognition or praise for his miraculous actions. Despite performing a miraculous healing, Jesus did not draw attention to himself but instead quietly left the area. The presence of a multitude in that place added to the chaos and confusion, allowing Jesus to slip away unnoticed. This verse serves as a reminder of Jesus' humble nature and his focus on helping others rather than seeking fame or glory. It also highlights the importance of performing acts of kindness and compassion without expecting anything in return. Through his actions, Jesus set an example for his followers to follow, emphasizing the importance of selfless service and helping those in need without seeking recognition or reward.

Theological Overview

Upon examining the theological interpretation of this verse, one can see that it highlights Jesus' humility and desire to avoid the limelight. Even after performing a miraculous healing, Jesus does not seek recognition or praise for his actions. This act of quietly slipping away demonstrates his modesty and focus on serving others rather than seeking personal glory. The word study of "conveyed himself away" provides further insight into Jesus' character. The Greek word used here, "ἠνέχθη," can also be translated as "carried away" or "taken away." This suggests a deliberate, purposeful action on Jesus' part to avoid being the center of attention. By choosing to disappear into the crowd, Jesus exemplifies his selflessness and commitment to fulfilling his mission without seeking accolades. It serves as a reminder to prioritize humility and service in our own lives, following Jesus' example of quietly and humbly serving others.
