Book of John - Chapter 5 - Verse 12

5:12
Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

Meaning

In this verse, the people are questioning the man who had been healed by Jesus. They are asking him who it was that told him to pick up his bed and walk. This question reveals the skepticism and curiosity of the people surrounding the miraculous healing. They are trying to determine the identity and authority of the person who performed such a miraculous act. By asking this question, they are seeking to understand the source of the healing power and the significance of the command given to the man. This verse highlights the reactions of those witnessing the miracle and shows their desire to understand and possibly verify the authenticity of the healing. It also emphasizes the importance of the words spoken by Jesus and the impact they had on the man who was healed.

Theological Overview

Here, we see the people questioning the man who had been healed by Jesus about the identity of the one who told him to pick up his mat and walk. This question reflects a lack of understanding or recognition of Jesus as the miraculous healer. The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the theme of faith and belief in Jesus as the Son of God and the source of healing and restoration. Through this question, the people are challenged to acknowledge Jesus as a powerful figure who has the authority to perform miracles and change lives. It also raises the importance of recognizing the divine presence in our midst and being open to the possibility of experiencing healing and transformation through faith in Jesus. The word study of the phrase "Take up thy bed, and walk" reveals the Greek word for "take up" carries the connotation of "to lift" or "to rise." This adds depth to the command given by Jesus, emphasizing not just physical healing but also a call to rise up from whatever situation or condition may be holding us back.
